Looking for a fun Christmas activity with the kids? Have you ever wanted to make & decorate your own Gingerbread House for your Christmas display? Well now you can!

The Larder will be holding a Funtastic Gingerbread House Workshop where you and your child can design and decorate your own Gingerbread House.

This Christmas why not start your own family tradition and create your very own magical Gingerbread House . What better way to get into the holiday spirit than spending the afternoon creating and decorating a gingerbread house with your little elf.

In this class, Dereick our Chef will be there to guide both of you with your construction and provide expert advice when it comes to putting the house together.

The Larder will provide all the freshly baked gingerbread pieces, for you to construct and decorate your own house, using Royal icing and a variety of different sweets (providing you don't eat them all first) to enhance your decoration.

Christmas Cake Decoration Class - Beginners

Have you ever wanted to learn Sugar Craft/Cake Decorating but didn't know where to start?

Now is your chance!

Come along and decorate your own Fruit Cake for Christmas under the expert tuition from our Award Winning Chef and Sugar Craft Tutor Dereick, who has been involved with cake decorating for almost 40 years. 

This is a 2 part course

Week 1  Monday 4th December 2017 6.30pm-9.00pm - Learn how to prepare your cake for covering in marzipan, then coat the cake. Prepare and coat the marzipaned cake with sugar paste, then crimp the edges to start the decoration. Dereick will then discuss the design for the decoration of the cake.

Week 2 Monday 11th December 2017 6.30pm-9.00pm - Learn different techniques and ideas for decorating your cake. The design can either be your own or follow Dereicks design. We will also introduce you to Royal Icing for piping both an inscription and a simple design on the side of the cake.

All you need to bring is a sense of fun.

Cook Real Mediterranean Food With our Chef Dereick.  

Learn from our professional chef how to cook the perfect Mediterranean feast. Once you’ve prepared it all you will get chance to sit down and enjoy eating your creations with a glass of wine in our relaxed dining area.

On the night you will be welcomed by our Chef, Dereick. You will be offered a light snack to start and you will be able to buy a drink if you would like one. 

In this session we will be making:

  • Tzatziki and Pita- A traditional Greek dip made with fresh Greek yogurt and garlic, served with pita bread. 
  • Spanakopita- A homemade spinach pie with feta cheese and herbs, baked in flaky philo pastry.
  • Lamb shank- Braised in tomato and cinnamon sauce on a aubergine puree served with Mizithra (Greek Cheese)
  • Traditional Crispiest Greek Lemon Potatoes (Patates Lemonates)
  • Baklava- A  Greek dessert made with walnuts pistachios and philo pastry baked in the oven and soaked in honey syrup.

Introducing The Larder Wine Tasting Club in partnership with Tipsy Wines

Join The Larder and Tipsy Wines for a night of great wine and nibbles from around the globe.

Guests will be in for a special treat courtesy of Tipsy Wines wine tasting experience.

With more than 20 different wines from around the globe, we guarantee a mouth-watering two hours with lots of interesting stories behind where our wines come from and some hints and tips for getting the best out of each bottle.

Kicking off the evening with a glass of Tipsy's famous Vaparetto Prosecco, we'll move on to a wide range of sumptuous reds, whites and one or two rose's for good measure. And don't worry if you're the designated driver, we'll provide the buckets so that you can still enjoy a good swirl and lots of wonderful aromas while the others get tipsy.

To round off the evening we'll have some dessert wine for those with a sweet tooth, or back to some more fizz for those of us still thirsty for bubbles.

Introduction to home cooking

Learn to cook for family and friends

Our Absolute Beginners cooking course runs one evening a week for 4 weeks.

Our cooking course for beginners will take you from novice to good home cook and teach you the skills you need to cook with confidence. Over the three sessions of this course we’ll teach you how to cook a wide variety of different styles of food and give you a great repertoire of recipes and techniques to use every day. At the end of each class you will sit down and try everything you have made as well as recap the recipes with the chefs.

Soups

Learn to make some delicious soups. Once you can make one soup, the possibilities are endless. Delicious and nutritious, soup is the ultimate comfort food and great to whip up for a simple lunch or a dinner party starter. 

Stews

You will be amazed at how many dishes are based on the principle of a basic stew. You will learn how to make a classic Bolognese, and one of the following: lamb tagine, or a chicken cacciatore, or a mixed bean ragout.

Roasts

Once you have mastered a classic roast, your Sundays will never be the same! You will cook one of the following: crispy roast chicken, herby roast lamb, a traditional roast beef accompanied by roast root vegetables and whole roast potatoes.

Breads

We bust the myth that bread making is tricky. You will learn to make a two different breaks during the course leaving you with understanding of how to make, shape and bake a good basic bread.

Salads sauces and dressings

Delicious salads, sauces and dressings will become part of your repertoire. Learn how to make delicious dressings – balsamic, mustard, Asian and herb. 

Vegetables

With the emphasis on ‘5 a day’ and being encouraged to eat a diet filled with pulses and green, leafy veg, we will showcase our favourite vegetable recipes using seasonal veg. You will learn some of the basics of cooking vegetables; steaming, boiling, braising, roasting.

Sweets

Learn how to make perfect chocolate brownies, mini meringues, apple crumble and scrumptious spiced butter biscuits. Making delicious desserts is so much easier than you think and you can wow your friends with your new baking skills!

FREE Dinner Club for over 50's

Cooking, eating socialising, what better way to learn to cook.

West Lothian Council have funded The Larder to provide cooking activities for the over 50's.  These activities include 3 x 8 week cookery courses and 20 dinner clubs.

No matter your level or experience of cooking this class is for you.

The dinner club is an opportunity for older people to come together to learn to cook or improve their cooking skills under the supervision of our experienced chefs.

All sessions are delivered at our bespoke cook school in Livingston.

Once you have cooked your meal you will sit down with the other participants to a delicious home made meal. 

Each session is limited to 10 people so classes are small, supportive and fun.

Our ever popular steak night is back again and we look forward to seeing you there.  

This is a night for meat lovers who want to learn the basics of cooking their prefect steak at home under the expert guidance of our chef Simon Preece.  The evening consists of demonstrations and you getting your sleeves rolled up to do some cooking before you sit down to make your home made meal.

The menu for the evening will include:

Starter:  

  • Garlic mushroom bruschetta with rocket oil.

Main course:  

  • Filet steak cooked just how you like it.
  • Home made onion rings and thrice fried chips.
  • Balsamic cherry tomatoes
  • Cracked pepper and whiskey sauce

Desert:

  • White chocolate and raspberry cheesecake with butternut sauce and popping candy.

Once you have cooked this with us you will be able to wow your friends and family at home.

On the night you will be greeted by Simon and will be offered some light refreshments and snacks before you get those sleeved rolled up to do the cooking yourself.  Simon will demonstrate some of the menu and you will cook some of it before you sit down to eat and have fun.

  • Carry home boxes for the leftovers.
You can bring your own bottle is you would like to drink more than a glass of wine.
